Couples Intimacy Coaching in Durham, NC

You two are good at almost everything else. Logistics, money, kids, the shared calendar — you run it well. Sex is the one thing you've stopped being able to talk about without it costing you the rest of the evening, so you've quietly agreed not to raise it. That agreement is doing more damage than the original problem.

I'm Tobias Jackson, and I work with couples in Durham, North Carolina and online on exactly this: the conversation you keep avoiding, and what's underneath it.

The problem is rarely the frequency

Couples come in with a number. We used to have sex twice a week, now it's twice a month, fix the number. But the number is a symptom of something further upstream, and it's usually one of these:

One of you has stopped being able to say no. When "no" costs something — a mood, a week of distance, a sigh — the yes stops meaning anything either. Desire needs a real no underneath it to be real. Make it genuinely safe to say no every time, and you'll hear yes far more often, because yes finally means something.

You're having two different conversations. One of you is asking for physical connection and hearing rejection of themselves. The other is asking for emotional connection first and hearing a demand. Both of you are right about your own experience and wrong about what the other one is doing.

Nobody knows what they want anymore. Years of managing each other's reactions and you've both lost track of your own desire. You can't negotiate toward something neither of you can name.

How we work on it

Sessions are with both of you. Sometimes I'll ask for an individual session each — not to take sides, but because it's often easier to find your own wanting when you're not watching your partner's face while you say it.

We work through embodiment, empathy, eroticism, and exploration together. In practice that means: getting each of you back into your own body so you can feel what you actually want; building the ability to hear something hard from your partner without going into defense; separating desire from performance so wanting each other isn't a test either of you can fail; and then, when those are working, deliberately trying things.

I give you specific things to do between sessions. Most of the change happens there, not in the room with me.

The format

We start with a free discovery call — the two of you and me, thirty minutes, no charge. Sessions run [SESSION LENGTH] at [PRICE], in person in Durham or over video. Most couples work with me for [TYPICAL ENGAGEMENT LENGTH].

This is coaching, not couples therapy. If there's active betrayal, abuse, or something clinical in play, that needs a licensed therapist first, and I'll say so on the call rather than take your money.

Questions couples ask

We've tried counseling. How is this different?

Counseling usually works on communication in general and hopes intimacy follows. We work on intimacy directly — desire, touch, asking, refusing — and communication improves because you're finally practicing it on the thing that's hard.

What if one of us doesn't want to be here?

That's worth naming on the discovery call rather than pretending. I'd rather work with one willing partner (individually) than run sessions where one of you is complying.

Do we have to do anything physical in front of you?

No. Nothing physical happens in session. Practices are for your own home, on your own time.

Is this only for straight married couples?

No. I work with unmarried couples, long-term partners, and non-traditional relationship structures.
